Lilly~love!

Lilly Pulitzer clothing is not just about the shift dress. Actually the shift dress can be a Lilly-lovers version of throwing on sweats and a tee shirt. (I don't actually own any of the true shift dress styles because they do not fit me well, but I wanted to give an example of why someone might wear one.) You want to be daytime comfy, not sexy, and just run some errands or pick up the kids from school. There are many other Lilly styles and looks.
Here are some of my favorites:

Many of Hubby's patients are women fighting breast cancer. They love it when he wears his Lilly ties--yep--some of those ties are pretty bright and crazy! It has become his signature look. For some reason Lilly makes a lot of people happy. Good for them that they have found something that puts a smile on their face if only for a moment!

And--I'll let you in on a little secret--most of us rarely pay full price for our Lilly! If I fall in love with a particular dress or other piece, then I will pay full price rather than take the chance of it selling out in my size (which does happen). But to be quite honest--I buy a lot of my Lilly at anywhere from 20% - 70% off. Just like J Crew, Banana Republic, etc. there are always promotions and sales once you start paying attention and getting on e-mail lists! ;-)

Here we are on family vacation last Summer. I'm in my hot pink Teagan dress and little Petunia is in her Lilly as well!

I think it's nice that you posted about this, but isn't it amazing that this is even an issue? It seems so simple to me: if you don't like a line of clothing, don't wear it; if you don't like reading about it, don't read blogs that promote it!

I like reading blogs (like yours!) that are uplifting and represent the best life has to offer. Everybody who reads my blog probably realizes that I am a liberal, but I don't read, for example, KappaPrep for her politics, but instead for her enthusiasm and joie de vivre!

Petunia: excellent post!

First, I want to take the opportunity to express how lovely your family looks in the picture you posted. You look amazing in your beautiful pink dress. Lilly P. is a fabulous designer and creates a very classy, chic, and feminine clothing line. Obviously after reading those negative comments I can see the lack of those traits in any of those other blogger women. Not only do they not possess an eye for fashion but a lack of discernment. I can only imagine the type of women they are and the lives they must lead with such an expressive vocabulary as in… “hurl”…”gross”… and my favorite “Trapper Keeper on crack”. Class, appropriateness, lady like, is not exactly what comes to mind as I read their comments. I’m sure they will find something more suitable in the commercialized beer t-shirt line and flip flops. If those women approved of my wardrobe I would be absolutely mortified. Carry on my fashionably fabulous friend, carry on.

Thank you for standing up for Lilly...

So glad you did this Petunia. You are such a sweetie. I agree. I was amazed at the cutting, hateful comments that were left on that post. I mean I love Lilly, but each to his own I say. I would wear it every day if I could afford it!! haha - and you are right about the $$$. I hardly ever pay full price for anything anymore. I mean the Lilly comments were so personal that I felt they were lashing out at more than just the clothing - agree?? xoxo

Who knew that post would cause such controversy!
As the first commenter said, if you don't like something move on! There are many designers I don't like but I wouldn't read about them or say anything mean to someone who liked it.

Love that last photo of your family :)

You're delightful and I'd be proud to have you in my pink and green dancing monkey court any day!

that's sad that people can be so petty and childish even when you're an adult. The shift dresses do nothing for me either so I stay away from them and am more of a tunic (as I recently found out), wrap dress type of girl.

Thank you for posting this! I was a bit taken back by all that as well. We must not let it bother us though. Your family is just beautiful! I hope my husband (whoever he is) will like to wear Lilly ties, too! Have the best day!

Maybe it's all those things you said. OR MAYBE THAT SHIT REALLY DOES LOOK SUITABLE FOR A CHILD. Oooh, I said the S word!

I guess I'm just not so sure what the big hullabaloo is... MM posted on her own blog and obviously struck a chord with lots of readers. Those readers posted their comments on MM's blog. No one went to a "preppy blog" and left these comments.

It really shouldn't come as a surprise that not everyone loves LP, just like not everyone loves ANYTHING. And people who hate LP have just as much of a right to express that opinion as people who love it. That's the glorious thing about America. In the same vein, if you put your opinion out on the internet, other people have the right to express theirs right back - that's the choice you make when you publish an article, write a book, make a blog post, etc.

So it sounds like to me, that everyone just needs to put on their freakin' big girl panties and get the hell over it.

You and hubby are such a cute couple!

Okay, you are really going to get a kick of out this-

So I go to the ortho and what do they tell me??? I need bottom braces again! I will have to wear them for 9 months, but I think it will be worth it in the long run. Are you going to get yours as well?

Awe ... your family looks just darling and I completely relate the LP making others (and me) happy!!! Xoxo-BLC

Keep being the positive ray of sunshine that you are! I always look forward to reading your blog! You're right, your family does look very happy in that pic. Love it.

What a lovely post as always. I was taken aback by comments as well. I understand where MMM is coming from and she does have the right to express her opinions, but the comments were very hurtful. Though there are several stores I do not care for and I find their clothing to be crude I would not do a post about that as I could have readers that shop there exclusively. I also agree with you in that a Lilly shift is like ym sweats. I look horrid in sweats so I choose to throw on a shift. Not EVER have a been told I look like a child either. At the end of the day we each have our opinions and just choose to express them differently! I do not think MM meant to hurt any of us, but the I am not so sure about the many commenters.

you are so good to have posted about this. at the end of the day, isn't it amazing how some peeps forget the golden rule? they are also the peeps that forget that what goes around comes around and throwing toxic garbage out into the universe only means that it's going to find its way back to them.

all positive, all the time.

happy monday :)

I posted on MM's blog that I loved Lilly, but I also love other "big" girl stores like J. Crew, BR, etc. Although, I do not know what deems them any different than Lilly. I don't think Lilly is childish clothing at all. I'm so glad you made this post=) Love the Reagan dress! You and the fam look so cute!!!!

So happy you posted about this, of course I respect other people's opinions but I think there is a way to present those opinions without being hurtful. I will continue to be bright and cheerful in my Lilly without being afraid to stand out. P.S your family is beautiful! My boyfriend is a lover of Lilly bow ties, I'll have to buy him a regular tie as well :)

Petunia,

You are very brave for being so frank about such a hot topic. I understand we don't all like the same things but I found MMMs tone spiteful and angry and all those other people were seemingly enraged sounding too. I've always liked reading her blog, but I may stop reading. There is no reason to be so mean about something. Everyone is entitled to thier own opinions and views...I am just not interested in reading about how bad they think Lilly looks. HAHA!

Muffy

Oh my goodness...I was so busy with mother and Ned that I missed all of the drama. As a Lilly fan, it's hard for me to understand why others wouldn't care for it but I suppose different strokes for different folks applies here...however...there's no need for folks to be insulting about it. "Hurling" seems a little over the top...I'm just saying...

Tell us how you REALLY feel people! Crazy! I don't read MMM so I would have never read that post but I guess some people really don't like Lilly. I can respect (can't imagine) that but why write about it and why the ridiculous comments.

Love the family photo! :-)

Wow- thanks for posting this. I had read it before. I actually was not offended by MMM and *most* of the comments. But there were a few that felt like personal in sults. And that anonymous comment directly towards our sweet friend Hopsy was just plain cruel.

I LOVE Lilly and buy almost everything on super duper sales. And I love that your hub wears it. Y'all look beautiful. I don't suppose you know a single Lilly loving man in upstate NY, do you? Hehehe!!

Preppy Pink Crocodile said...

Sorry - I am on my b-berry. I meant to say I had not read this before.

I don't know who MMM is, but I'm sure by now you've heard my take on people who try to ram their opinions down the throats of others. I myself am rather indifferent to Lilly, some of her stuff is totally cute, others are a little busy for me. I don't own anything Lilly, but I can appreciate the aesthetic. That someone would feel the need to write what sounds like a rather nasty post makes me feel rather bad for them and all that such a post may imply or indicate, though I won't presume to know the exact details.

Lovely post Petunia, very classy and well stated. :)
